Today’s devotional is teaching us about the last supper. Christ was telling His disciples that He would be leaving them shortly, and so He was giving them vital information about the future. He took bread and blessed it and said think of this as my body, so that the bread really represented Christ’s body. He ask each of them to eat that bread and in doing so they were taking a piece of His body into them. Then He repeated it with the wine saying think of this as my blood. When Christ says that only those who have eaten of His flesh and drank of His blood will be with Him in Heaven, He isn’t saying that only these few men would be able to go to Heaven. He is telling us that we must have Christ in us emotionally, and spiritually, in order to get to Heaven.
Before Christ’s birth people could give great sacrifices for their mistakes to God in ceremonies. Not to be confused with what the Word tells us we must give back to God, a portion of what they had achieved that year, but not just a small example, the best of their work. Be it animal, or food they had grown because of His blessings on them. This takes us to the foundation behind tithes as well. God never takes away from us what is needed. He gives us more than we need so that we can give Him a portion that is His. Yes tithes are important, the church fed and clothed the widows and their children, as well as the churches business that had to be taken care of. Oil for lamps, and whatever work was being done in His name. Today most churches may or may not have a small pantry to help those in need, depending on their size. There is still debts that must be paid, like mortgages and or taxes on a building, their is electricity, water, gas etc. There are other needs as well, like mission work that is done when missionaries put their lives and that of their family many times as well, at risk in countries where being a Christian is not allowed, but they are spreading the word of God and the story of Christ to millions of people daily. It is reasons such as this that show us why God never ask of us what is beyond our means, but He gives us extra and let’s our human nature decide if we are going to do what is right. There has never been a time when God has not provided for our basic needs. We have always had access to whatever we need.
When Christ spoke to His faithful followers at the last supper, He knew He had to prepare them for a future without Him by their side. He had to ready them for their future, but He stressed to them they would never be alone. God would send them another, just as He had sent Christ to be with them. We are never left to wander alone without direction. We have been provided for every moment of our existence, we have but to open our eyes and see it. Our God meticulously planned how each organ in our body works with the next, He designed our bodies to function as we needed. Everything was done for a specific reason. I simply can’t imagine how anyone could think some bang in the universe could have formed all that we know of on our planet. God surely had a hand in the creation and will have control over it forever more.
